FISHING AND THE LAKES

Photo of man holding fish A VARIETY OF LAKES

Expect to find some of the best trout fishing in the province at Thuya Lakes. The lakes range in elevation from 3800 to 5400 feet ensuring good fishing throughout the season – from June until September.

Our resort is the only one in the area, and with over 30 small, well managed mountain lakes to choose from, you will certainly be assured of privacy.

The lakes vary in size and deepness – most are under a mile long with an average depth of 45 feet – all self-spawn with wild Kamloops trout .

The geography of the area is smaller mountainous with heavily forested areas surrounding the resort and lakes. Although there has been active logging in the area over the years, there are no visible logging sites.

We stress catch and release fishing on most of our lakes – however, some are overpopulated with smaller fish and need harvesting to maintain an acceptable level of larger fish.

More challenging trophy lakes produce 3 to 4 pounders, with the odd “lunker” up to 8 pounds for the patient and expert fisherman.

We have not allowed the use of gas motors or use of tackle such as “gangtrolls” for many years, and promoted fly-fishing long before it became popular. There is ample feed in the lakes, and the hatches are spectacular.

“I can think of no place more beautiful on a summer evening, with trout jumping like raindrops on the waters surface... A fish that will battle you with every ounce of strength he has. These are the fish of Thuya Lakes.”

We supply boats on 12 lakes, with most of the lakes having 2 boats each. The lakes not serviced by lodge boats are usually fished with float tubes. We ensure that there are only 2 - 4 persons on a lake at one time. None of our lakes have any resorts or private dwellings on them.

Important Note: Except for the two lodge lakes, all other lakes are not directly accessible by vehicle - only by hiking or ATV.
